Make It A Memorable Memorial Day

As we approach the holiday weekend and prepare for BBQ’s, sunshine and fun times with family and friends, many may not realize the history behind Memorial Day. While most of us know Memorial Day to be a day of remembrance for fallen US soldiers, the holiday actually began in the late 1800’s as “Decoration Day” honoring those who fought and died in the Civil War and was initially only recognized by northern states. After World War I, the holiday changed from honoring fallen soldiers from the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war, and is now observed in every state on the last Monday in May per the National Holiday Act of 1971.

The Memorial Day 3-day weekend is often unofficially recognized as the “kick-off to summer,” with many schools dismissing for the year and families planning vacations around the holiday weekend.  It has become a time to relax, reflect, and regroup for parents and kids alike. Busy schedules revolving around school, sports, work, and just life in general has many of us moving at a pace that challenges us to keep up.  The holiday weekend provides an opportunity to unwind and enjoy time with family and friends, while honoring those who fought to ensure we could do just that.

So put aside the stresses of daily life and enjoy your Memorial Day…whether that be relaxing by a pool, feeling the wind on a boat, or simply sitting in the backyard grilling your favorite burgers and laughing with friends. Life is busy, but moments generated by holidays like Memorial Day give us the chance to appreciate the little things, to spend time with those we love, and to make memories that last a lifetime.
